Our wounded waifs
A while ago, when I was the Head of Artistic Management at the Music Faculty of AMU (Academy of Performing Arts), responsible for the preparation and organisation of all the schools’ public activities, I met a representative of a citizens’ association that looks after wounded waifs, living in appalling conditions, literally on the edge of society. I realised how even I walk silently past things that should concern me, how naïve I am if I think that some institutional establishment can help these poor souls. I tried to help those who were trying to show these children and adolescents another world than the one in which they lived, even at the risk that our efforts to expose them to music and theatre may miss their mark. We succeeded, they came. Perhaps they were caught off guard, but they stayed. I admired and continue to admire the work of the selfless people who don’t hesitate to risk their health and often their safety and that of those nearest to them, to give at least a little to those who need it. I gradually had the chance to see a little of what they actually do, as well as the depth of the problem that should concern our superior society. If this is an opportunity to take another step towards improving the lives and feeling of these unfortunates that they have not been totally “written off”, then I wholeheartedly add my recommendation and ask that the association’s request be heard and that help be provided. It seems to me that the only right way is the way of prevention and building the self confidence of those who flounder without it like all their fellow outcasts.
